Fabio Capellos England team put their World Cup woes behind them to comfortably dispatch with Bulgaria 4-0.Much was made of the 4-4-2 system that England used persistently at the World Cup with many questioning whether it suited Englands style of play but Capello chose to use this formation once again for The Three Lions opening Euro 2012 qualifying match. Wayne Rooney played the pivotal role in the system though, dropping deep to be Englands playmaker. At times he was playing in a similar role to Mesut Ozil did at the World Cup for Germany meaning Englands system almost mirrored the one utilised so effectively by Germany in South Africa.Bulgaria were seemingly trying to soak up pre sure and frustrate the home team, and crowd, by setting out in a very defensive minded 4-5-1 formation Yasiel Puig Jersey with Premier League players Martin and Stiliyan Petrov amongst the starters for Bulgaria.England started very brightly though and the visitors were already struggling to cope with Wayne Rooney in his new role. The relieved pre sure on the team was evident too with England stroking the ball around the Wembley pitch, which finally seems to have seen the last of its problems, with consummate ease.England were still struggling to make another clear cut opportunity to increase their lead further and when Glen Johnson inexplicably sliced his clearance towards his own goal, a mishap that required the impeccable reflexes of Joe Hart to prevent an equaliser, the favourites knew that they would need another goal if they were to silence the vociferous section of Bulgarian fans situated in one corner of Wembley.The Bulgarians tactics, to stifle the English attacks, were beginning to become more and more effective as England struggled to score that elusive second goal that would have put the match beyond any doubt. The long ball style of old was showing signs of re-appearing as The Three Lions repeatedly looked to the channels in search of the pace of Theo Walcott.The second half started in much the same manner as the first half ended. Bulgaria had settled and were hurrying and pre surising England as they advanced into an attacking position but England were still having the better of the po se sion. A moment of sheer cla s, which seemed the only way that the hosts were going to extend their advantage, from Wayne Rooney followed but, Sandy Koufax Jersey after a good run, his beautifully chipped shot from long-range went just over the cro s-bar.Wayne Rooney played a key part in all of Englands goals.A one goal advantage is never enough in football though and a break from Bulgaria resulted in a rare England defensive lapse from Michael Dawson, who went off injured moments later, allowed Ivelin Popov, recently targeted by Blackburn Rovers, to shoot in a good position but he fired wide of Joe Harts left hand post when he should of tested the Manchester City goalkeeper.For the first time in the match the visitors lost their discipline and, whilst in a promising situation where Joe Hart did expertly well to keep Bulgaria at bay, they committed too many men forward which resulted in a swift England counter attack, lead by Wayne Rooney, who picked out the run of JERMAIN DEFOE to grab his second, and Englands second, of the match with a well placed finish.Jermain Defoe celebrates scoring his second.Bulgaria almost reduced the deficit moments later with England appearing to become a little complacent with their two goal advantage and if it wasnt for the alertne s of the excellent Joe Hart they would of been back in it but the former Shrewsbury keeper batted the ball away with two hands.As the game ticked over past the hour mark Adam Johnson was brought on by Fabio Capello, replacing Theo Walcott who was frustratingly inconsistent on his return to international duty. He showed some darting runs and the bursts of pace which have seen him improve his form remarkably for his contracted club, Arsenal, but also fired wide when shooting or put in a poor cro s on regular occasions highlighting the fact that despite recent comments in the media he is still not the finished article.The game was put beyond any doubtthough Joc Pederson Jersey when, substitute, ADAM JOHNSON, fired home his first goal in England colours from the edge of the area. After some good play from Jermain Defoe squared the ball to Wayne Rooney, who helped the ball into the path of Adam Johnson and the Manchester City man, with a simple piece of skill, sold his marker, cut inside onto his favoured left foot and hammered the ball beyond Bulgarian goalkeeper Nikolay Mikhailov. In-truth the FC Twente goal-keeper should have done a better job of saving the shot from Johnson but he was beaten by the sheer power of the effort from the tricky winger.Adam Johnson scored his first international goal against Bulgaria.Bulgaria were well and truly a beaten side by now and this allowed JERMAIN DEFOE to compete the rout, and his hat-trick, in the proce s. Slotting the ball home, under pre sure from a Bulgarian defender, very neatly. It was his first hat-trick at international level and the Tottenham Hotspur hitman was naturally delighted with his achievement.All in all it was a solid performance from England and one that merited a 4-0 victory. English cla seventually shonethrough against a Bulgarian side who put up a strong resistance for a large majority of the match but could not contain the home sides top performers. Its easy to get carried away but England fans most not do so, a good qualifying campaign was enjoyed in the build up to the World Cup and look what happened in South Africa! There were still worries too. Theo Walcott still underwhelms and Glen Johnson is a turning into a liability in defence for England and this will need to be looked at by Capello. But a comfortable win that sets the qualifying campaign for Euro 2012 was needed and it was achieved. It was a convincing win but, with doubts still Maury Wills Jersey remaining over this England team, whether this golden generation will finally prove their doubters wrong in 2012, their last chance to do so, is certainly up for debate.
